Container Full of PETs for India
Friday, 26 August 2011 17:00

Getting StartedOnce again, PET Tampa became the distribution point for yet another container load of PET vehicles, this time bound for India.  As with the previous container that was loaded in Tampa and sent to Ecuador, PET Tampa was asked to do it again.  A Lions International group in HalfwayKolkata India that has received PETs from other workshops before requested three containers loaded with PETs.  Coordinated by Von Driggs, Director of Operations for PET International, one of the containers would be filled at PET Tampa, another at PET Florida in Penney Farms, and a third yet to be determined.  Although our warehouse was full, we did not have quite enough to completely fill the container.  PET Texas stepped up to the plate, as they did for the Ecuador shipment, and sent us 65 Adult PETs which arrived on Thursday, just the day before the container was scheduled to arrive on August 26, 2011.

Unlike last time, where we had an entire day with the container on site, this would be what is called a "Live Load" where the container must be filled within two hours.  There was concern about that, because it took us more than three hours to load the Ecuador container.  So, we put the word out, and seventeen volunteers showed up Friday afternoon!  The heat and humidity was definitely a factor, and having that many volunteers allowed us take frequent water breaks.  With a lot of hustle, the last boxed PET was put into the container just one and a half hours later!  A new record for us to fill a container.

What Is A P.E.T.?

Active Image

P.E.T. is an acronym for a Personal Energy Transportation vehicle. The PET was originally conceived to provide mobility to victims of land mines, polio, and other calamities that limit the ability to walk. Each PET vehicle is a sturdy hand cranked wheelchair built to withstand demanding off-road terrain. The basic construction is wood and specially formed metal components. PETs are built in many workshops around the world, and shipped to those who are in need of a transporation vehicle that accommodates full or partial impairment.
